The initial: l

[l]

What the mouth does
Tongue tip on the ridge, air escaping around the sides, voice on.
Closest English sound
The l in “leaf” — the light one. Never the dark l of “full”.
Where learners slip
Using the dark, swallowed English l at the end of a syllable shape, which muddies the vowel.
Drill that fixes it
Keep the tongue forward and the vowel bright: la, not “lawh”.

The final: -iang

[jɑŋ]

What the mouth does
i-glide into a back a, closing on the back nasal.
Closest English sound
The “yang” of yin and yang.
Where learners slip
Confusing it with ian, whose vowel is front and whose ending is tip-n.
Drill that fixes it
ian = “yen”, iang = “yahng”. Two different mouths.

Tone change you need to know

Two third tones in a row

When a third tone is followed by another third tone, the first one is pronounced as a second tone. 你好 is written nǐ hǎo but said “ní hǎo”. The writing never changes — only the mouth does.

Third tone before any other tone. Before a first, second or fourth tone, the third tone loses its rise entirely and stays low. This “half third” is what you hear in almost all real sentences.
